Breastfeeding Support

Although not yet published, a few studies were conducted on at the MDD.

Impact of Nutrition Counselling and Group Activities on Breastfeeding

A phone survey was conducted with 400 breastfeeding MDD clients who had delivered in 2004 and whose babies were six months old or older. The results show that the MDD approach favourably influences not only the rate of breastfeeding but also its duration. At six months, the rate of breastfeeding was 77% and the rate of exclusive breastfeeding was 45%.

Aspects of the MDD approach identified as associated to this positive effect are:

  • the number of prenatal visits;
  • a weight gain of 4.5 kg at 20 weeks;
  • participation to the breastfeeding workshops.

Breastfeeding among Quebec born MDD clients with low schooling

A study was conducted with 145 mothers Quebec born MDD clients between 2002-2004 who had less than 11 years of schooling. At six months, the breastfeeding rate was 40% and the rate of exclusive breastfeeding was 24%. In comparison, data from the province of Quebec for mothers with less than 11 years of schooling are respectively 27% and 2%. This study also showed that participation to the breastfeeding workshops and coming to the breastfeeding clinic increase not only the breastfeeding rate but also its duration by 10 weeks, this result being statistically significant.

The MDD approach on breastfeeding was the topic of the article Allaitement et pauvreté. Deux réalités compatibles in the February 2007 issue of the bulletin "Comment SIPPE'rendre?" published by the Direction de santé publique de Montréal.
